Mr. Cohen's site is a wonderful hyper-text history of the
ufological and is an excellent single source repository for
detailed and balanced work so complete and detailed that
one could spend absorbed _days_ in it. It is tabbed,
indexed, collated, explained, and referenced so well that it
will be difficult for the interested and openminded individual
NOT to be well informed by the most fascinating and full
featured approach to ufological history this writer has EVER
seen! I can't be effusive ENOUGH!

jc 4/12/2013: Adjustment made to my note here because of link changes on the Internet.

Richard Hall has recently passed away. I just read his obituary in Long Island USA
Newsday, 8/26/2009
and was greatly saddened by his passing. The work he performed
many years ago at NICAP is certainly
one of the main contributing factors as to why
CohenUFO came to being in the first place.

His many well-known accomplishments are partially detailed here in links below, and
will be enumerated by many others in their tributes to him . I am thoroughly honored,
humbled, and a bit amazed that, in the links section on his web page from
August 2003 and continuing at least to November 2007 (5 years), Richard chose
to list CohenUFO second from the top, immediately under FUFOR. (This was recently
changed to #3, immediately under the Blue Book archive.)
One can see this for yourself by
going to his site at this link and scrolling down the page there (as long as it remains up),
and then seeing his pages at the Wayback Machine here or here.

From what he wrote in his letters to me, and in both his preface to his links section on
his
site and the placement of the CohenUFO link there, one can see he felt I got it pretty
much all right and that there was
legitimate information at my website that was and is,
by his own definition, scholarly
and scientific.

Richard, I (we) are already missing you, and even though you can't see this now (or maybe
you can, who knows?)
, I once again thank you publicly for your kind words to me below.
They certainly helped me keep working for years on this website until I finally got it
legible. Thank you so much for what you have given to us all.

With the utmost respect,
Jerry Cohen

Jerry,

What does "UFO traffic" on the internet lack? Well-informed commentary;
a scholarly, scientifically oriented approach; courtesy toward those who
hold dissenting views; and (in some cases) intellectual honesty and
sincerity of purpose. Therefore, it is highly refreshing to see you
going strongly against the grain and carrying the flag for careful,
dispassionate, and conscientious study of this most intriguing
phenomenon.

From someone who was "there at the creation" (almost), my heartfelt
thanks for your efforts. -- Dick Hall

P.S. ....................snip......................... I disagree with your
"Brief Overview of NICAP." It was a totally different organization at
the end, led by totally different people motivated in totally different
ways. This needs to be made clear. See my article about 1993 in the
MUFON symposium proceedings on this question. My copy is buried right
now, but I can dig up the exact reference for you. Also, if you haven't
already done so you may want to provide a link to Fran Ridge's NICAP

Dick,

God bless you for your comments. I wasn't sure how many people have
really understood from whence I've been coming. Please know that your
praise has buoyed my spirits greatly since few have your perspective on
this most enigmatic topic of our age. It means a lot to me.

Rest assured I will correct my NICAP comments & page to reflect your
views since I watched the proceedings from afar while you were immersed
in it. Not many are around that were in a position to see the things you saw
from within. If you dig up the reference to your 1993 article, I will add this
in and establish the link to Fran Ridge's NICAP site. Can't believe I omitted
it. It was an incredible oversight on my part. There has been a huge amount
of information to process historically and holding down other jobs along with
this have not made it any easier.

BTW: Don't stop doing what you're doing, it's still needed. Don't think
you haven't had a great effect. I and others might not have been doing this
without you. Few people ever accomplish everything they want to do in life
and most don't realize the influence they've had on others. Also, the harder
you work, the less you can see this.

Best wishes for further success.

Very sincerely,

Jerry

Jerry,

I think you perform a service by presenting a much more balanced picture
of Allen Hynek's role
than Dolan and others. Dolan's views are constantly
colored by his conspiratorial and "anti-government" biases. He committed
some real whoppers in his book, which I reviewed for International UFO
Reporter. (CUFOS: Center for UFO Studies)

Dear Jerry Cohen:

In conjunction with the 50th anniversary year of the IGY
(International Geophysical Year) and my association with it, and
with my late boss Allen Hynek, I turned up your cogent 1997
"Oberg/Cooper Rebuttal 3." Your defense of Allen's UFO work and
his evolution from skeptic to believer was reasoned and well written,
particularly applicable from the standpoint of a UFO experiencer.
The final paragraphs in which you thank Hynek on behalf of
eyewitnesses such as yourself should be framed
! I'm happy that
you uncovered my "Allen Hynek as I Knew Him" piece from IUR
and quoted from it. . . . snip . . .

Although your rebuttal (#3) article is 10 years old, I should perhaps
point out a few minor misstatements in the section "Some
additional comments by Walter Webb
."
That 1957 meeting in
Allen's home was not really the spur to my UFO curiosity, and I
had already by then accepted the reality of an unexplained core of
sightings. My interest had been sparked by my own 1951 sighting.
Officially, I began to investigate the topic and other sightings in
1952, the year after my personal observation. In the section "This is
what Webb said, in his own words," the first paragraph is mine but
the second and third paragraphs are Hynek's.

. . . snip . . .

At any rate, keep up your fine work!

From: Dr Harry Willnus
Subject: FRANK MANNOR SWAMP GAS CASE
To: Jerry Cohen <cohenufo@optonline.net>

Dr. Harry Willnus

Jerry: Just wandered upon your web site & must say it's a nice
piece. I've been into the UFO scene for something like 50 years. I
was an investigator with Hynek's group (CUFOS) and am presently
listed as a consultant with MUFON.

I investigated the Dexter Michigan, UFO event of March 1966.
This, of course, became known as the "Swamp Gas" case and our
friend Dr. Hynek became a laughing stock. This was unfortunate
as Hynek was thrown into a situation where there appeared to be no
earthly, common sense explanation. And the press wanted an
explanation. I remember those days and everyone here in Michigan
was following the story. Some people were frightened.

I have a copy of the police report from the Washtenaw County
Sheriff's Department from March 20, 1966. There were 10 police
officers, five squad cars, and several detectives there that night at
the Frank Manner farm. Also, a number of neighbors gathered for
the strange light show that went on for a time.

I wrote about this case for UFO MAGAZINE (UK) and the article
titled "Swamp Gas Revisited" appeared in Feb. of 2004.
Unfortunately this was the last issue published by this UK
magazine as their editor died unexpectedly and the publication
went under.

I can possibly mail you a copy of the police report if you have not
seen it. After reading this report it's obvious that swamp gas was
not the culprit.

Keep up the good work. I'm hoping for disclosure before my time
comes.

DR. HARRY WILLNUS
MICHIGAN

Harry Willnus & Michigan cases continued:

jc 10/31/05: Received police report from Harry regarding
the Mannor's case . From the following comment in the
report

"Upon returning to the patrol vehicle, the undersigned officers were
met by others who had gathered to observed, and the undersigned
officer were informed that one of the objects had been hovering
directly over the area where our flashlight beams had been seen,
and had then departed in a West Direction of flight, at high rate of
speed."

It would appear a simple balloon hoax can be ruled out.
We can also ascertain there may have been more than
one object involved.

A description of one of the objects was given as follows:

"Object was observed to be of a brown coloring, appearing to be
Quilted type outside surface. Object appeared to be flat upon the
bottom, and cone shaped toward the top, however, being low in
height. Two small lights appeared to be at the outer edges of the
object, glowing in a bluish-green light, and intensifing to a brilliant
red in color. When the vehicle or object illuminated, the lighting
was a yellow-white in color, and ran horizontal between the two
outer lights, allowing some of the object to be viewed. Outer
body appeared to be rough in texture."

A simple star this was not. It would appear the explanation
"swamp gas," also leaves much to be desired in our
attempts to ascertain what was seen by various people in
this intriguing incident.

Additional important information regarding testimonies
from civilians and police involved in the Mannors case,

_as well as
other_ Michigan UFO cases occurring
around the time of the Mannor's case,
can be found at
http://www.cal12.com/Michigan%201966%20UFO.htm.
This information certainly gives us more than adequate
reason to question the "Swamp Gas" theory as _the_
supposedly definitive explanation for same.

1/3/2005: Here is an important note Harry sent to me regarding
an occurrence concerning Dr. Hynek and related by Washtenaw
County Sheriff Doug Harvey. The incident occurred in Harvey's
presence. It would appear to be a very good reason Hynek gave
his "Swamp Gas" explanation in the face of data which seems to
negate it. It also makes us realize the newspapers were thrown
off by it at the time.
Respectfully tacked on at the end are my own
thoughts regarding Harry's final comment regarding a possible
"government coverup."

March 1996. Steven Powell reposted it after the Sturrock Committee
had updated the Condon Committee's findings via new data submitted.

Thanks for your kind words, and I return them wholeheartedly. I've
admired your posts as well, and in fact tried to download your reply
to Oberg from whatever site it was originally on, so I could have a
complete copy. Is there somewhere I can find it now? Or could you
e-mail it to me? It was full of valuable information I've never seen
elsewhere.

Hi Rebecca, hi all,

I've been following this thread very closely and would like to
'hop in' for a second with my two coppers. First, God bless
Rebecca. Bex, you're a wonderful resource and always have
something of value to contribute, thank you. If we had nine or
ten more like you, and Jerry Cohen, (and a paltry few others)
ufology would be in much better shape than it is in right now.

Hi again Jerry,

It occurred to me that maybe you don't get thanked enough for all
the hard and meticulous work that you do! The most recent example
being the Oberg/Cooper material. Jerry, you're the BEST, bar
none!

What you're doing is so needed/necessary. Not too many guys are
willing to chip away at a wall 16 ft. thick and ten miles high.
You have the commitment and dedication of a man that KNOWS he has
the truth on his side. Knowing the 'truth' of a thing is a potent
motivator and source of energy. Your work reflects that
confidence, and your style reflects an intelligent, rational, and
thoughtful mind. ....snip....

Mr. Cohen,

Thank you for the great website you have created . I really have
enjoyed reading it. What I have appreciated most is your approach
to this important topic. I have often wondered why no one had yet
done more than just catalog some interesting cases and not really
broach the seriousness of the subject.

Anyway yours is the definitive site as far as I'm concerned keep up
the excellent work !

Question:

Articles about aliens and UFOs?
where can I find interesting (but true and official) articles
about UFO encounters? Or may be even interesting facts
about Area 54?

Please share some good websites. (better if they are
reliable sources)

I am giving here good links. See if you like them,
but no one can say that they are ture or not.

1. www.ufoevidence.org
2. www.ufocenter.com
3. www.ufonews.in

Answer 2
I look at all I can find when I'm looking. These below are
pretty good, cohenufo being the most even handed I've found.

Pro UFO more, or less:
http://www.cohenufo.org/
http://www.bibleufo.com/zlinks3.htm

Skeptical 100%
http://csicop.org/

I like to look at the CIA and National Security Agency public
info sites for the declassified documents, but everything's in
PDF format. Nice to be able to double check what's said
elsewhere to be actual documents, though. Some of the UFO
sites change things around to suit their purposes, a word here
a paragraph there.

Haven't caught cohenufo.org doing it yet.

jc comment: . . . and you won't see that either. I'm
telling the truth, the research is as solid as a rock, and I
believe
this thing proves itself. I'd be lying to myself if I
changed the actual meaning of any of it, and that's the
very last thing I'd want to do
. I want the true answer as
much, or even more than you do.
